A minimum of 13 people perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
